Virginia School Construction Eligible for $119M to Improve Energy Efficiency

(Washington Business Journal) – Virginia schools can vie for part of $119 million in stimulus bonds for energy efficiency improvement and renovations, Gov. Tim Kaine announced Wednesday.  The projects will be financed through the Qualified School Construction Bond program and can include work on heating, cooling and ventilation systems, insulation and window improvements, and the installation of solar, biomass or on-site wind power systems.

The renewable energy retrofits aim to lower schools’ energy costs and rechannel spending into the classroom, Kaine said. New construction projects are now eligible for funding.

School divisions and local governments can apply for the bonds through November 11. Selected projects will be announced mid-December.

This is the second round of the QSCB bonds, Kaine announced $71.6 million for eight projects earlier this year.

“The projects made possible by these ARRA bonds will create jobs, improve our children’s learning environment, and promote green technology and construction here in the Commonwealth,” he said.
