UCLA’s Institute of the Environment Launches Water Leadership Course

The University of California at Los Angeles’ (UCLA) Institute of the Environment (IoE) has received a five year, $100,000 grant from the Annenberg Foundation to launch the Dorothy Green Water Leadership Course.  This new class, developed in memory of Dorothy Green, will educate a new generation about water and environment in California and provide the leadership skills that are essential to making an impact on water use and conservation.

Dorothy Green was the founding President of Heal the Bay, the Los Angeles and San Gabriel Watershed Council, and the California Water Impact Network. She was an “environmental entrepreneur”, an advocate and a leader in all facets of California water policy and management.

UCLA offers courses for its undergraduate majors in environmental science on hydrology, water chemistry, the fate and transport of pollution and other important water science topics. However, this will be the first course offered at the IoE on the policy issues of water supply and water quality, and the leadership qualities needed to improve how we use this precious and increasingly scarce resource.

The first year’s course will be taught by Mark Gold, environmental scientist, President of Heal the Bay (and UCLA alumni), and Paula Daniels, attorney and Commissioner on the City of Los Angeles Board of Public Works. Both are experts in water policy, science and politics. Other leaders in water policy and faculty experts on water will join them in contributing guest lectures. Students will learn about how water is delivered to Southern California from distant sources, what is happening to water resources in California and around the world, and how water conservation, watershed protection, water treatment and new urban development strategies are changing the equation of water supply and quality in California.

The Annenberg Foundation is headquartered in Los Angeles and is dedicated to advancing public well-being through improved communication.
