The Presidio Graduate School – Pioneer and Leader in Green MBA Sector
The Presidio Graduate School (formerly the Presidio School of Management) in San Francisco, California is one of the leading green educational institutions in the world. As one of the first graduate schools to focus exclusively on sustainability, it has been a forerunner in green, with all of the courses it offers having sustainable management fully integrated into the curriculum. The school offers both an MBA in Sustainable Management, as well as a Masters in Public Administration ( MPA ) in Sustainable Management. Students are also provided with the opportunity to do a dual degree in Sustainable Management, combining business administration with public administration. The Presidio also offers an Executive Certificate in Sustainable Management. This article focuses on the MBA stream.
The school is focused on producing business and civic leaders who will manage organizations towards financial success in socially and environmentally responsible ways – creating responsible and successful stewards of the new economy. The average age of a Presidio “green MBA” student is 36, resulting in many bringing significant business experience to their studies.
The institution defines “…Sustainable Management as the ability to direct the course of a company, community or country in ways that restore and enhance all forms of capital – human, natural and financial – to generate stakeholder value and contribute to the well-being of current and future generations.” The MBA is Sustainable Management is delivered through an innovative hybrid approach combining on-site residency for brief but concentrated periods and off-site participation. Students attend four days each month at the Fort Mason Center in San Francisco. In addition, students must participate in online discussions, conference calls, team assignments and projects with organizations in the private and public sectors. In this way, students are able to build stronger connections with faculty and classmates, without having to embark on a full-time residency based program.
The MBA in Sustainable Management is comprised of 16 courses, divided into 4 strands:
- People – courses in this strand focus on: ethics, culture and values; team learning and leadership; strategic management; imagination and creativity; emotional intelligence; and systems thinking.
- Numbers – courses in this strand focus on: financial capital and how it is governed, including accounting, finance operations and capital markets.
- Markets – the courses in this strand focus on: the function of the marketplace in commerce and organizational life; business disciplines of managerial marketing; and economics, including ecological economics.
- Sustainability – the courses in this strand focus on: principles of sustainable management to business education; exploration of the 4-billion-year store of natural capital upon which economic prosperity depends; study of sustainable products and services; and implementing sustainable business practices.
