Whether you are looking to transition to a new career out of choice or necessity, there are many questions you should ask yourself first which will help you answer the question “what green job or career should I be looking for?” Just like many other industry sectors, the “green” career space can be very broad and it is a very daunting task to decide which is the best job or career to look/try for. By starting with another series of questions, you will have a better chance of moving forward in the right direction for you – not every green job is appropriate for everyone, so you have to make sure the job or career you choose is a suitable fit.
This article is the first in a series where you will be asked to answer each question, in order to help you narrow down which green job/career, if any, is the best opportunity for you to pursue.

The first question to ask yourself is “why” are you thinking of a green job/career? Are you searching for a job/career that is more in line with your personal values and social ethics? Does “green” sound like it will be the next “boom” market, and that there are potential riches to be made? Do you find yourself suddenly thrown into a state of turmoil, having been laid off from the job you have had for 20 years and thought you would stay with until retirement, with no idea what you should be doing next and are looking for some type of direction?

While “green” is an emerging market and there is more and more funding available for training and re-training into this field, it is still employment. In other words, if you are looking for a “get rich quick” scheme, it may not be the pot of gold for little effort that some people are hoping for. It may be that, for people who want to work in a field more in line with their personal values and priorities, making the necessary investments for training/re-training will be less of an issue than for those who are merely looking for a job to pay the bills. For others, it is to garner respect and social acceptance by having a green job. No matter the reason why you are looking into green jobs/careers, you should be honest with yourself in terms of what is motivating you to look at “green“. It will be important for you to know this about yourself as you start to answer the other questions, so that you can really choose the right career path and/or get the most out of your next job. We love hearing from readers and this is a subject that many people like to talk about.
