The associated press is reporting that the city of Saginaw Michigan is being considered for a new Solar Panel manufacturing company as a possible site for a plant. Saginaw is competing with a Texas community to land the California based solar panel company, GlobalWatt. The new facility would add 500 green jobs in the next 5 years. Saginaw mayor Greg Branch said the company could reuse what was previously an Enterprise Automotive Systems plant to manufacture solar modules. Globalwatt is not the only Solar panel manufacturer that is considering area for expansion.
The report suggests that Norcross, Ga.-based Suniva is considering setting up a $250 million, 500-job solar energy manufacturing plant on 40 acres in Thomas Township. The company has not released a timeline for this project.
Economic experts say 500 jobs in the manufacturing industry also would generate 1,300 “spin-off” opportunities in retail and service businesses.
The Saginaw area which at one time was a hub of manufacturing activity for automotive companies has been hit very hard by the economic crisis and the demise of the Big 3′s market share badly needs the new green jobs and tax income.
