New England firms partner to address climate change. (Boston, Mass. – Sept. 24, 2009) – EPA’s Climate Leaders program announced that Raytheon Company, headquartered in Waltham, Mass., was one of three industry partners recognized recently for meeting their greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction goals. Raytheon is one of 29 New England companies that have made commitments to reducing GHGs under this EPA program.
Raytheon’s accomplishments include finding cleaner sources of energy, reduced energy consumption, increased production of renewable energy and retired old equipment, all in an effort to reduce their contribution to climate change.
Specifically, Raytheon Co., a charter Partner in Climate Leaders, pledged to reduce GHG emissions from its U.S. operations by 33 percent between 2002 and 2009, normalized for revenue and adjusted for inflation. Raytheon not only met, but exceeded its reduction goal one year ahead of schedule. By the end of 2008, the company had reduced its emissions 38 percent normalized for revenue and adjusted for inflation. This reduction equates to 275,000 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions avoided cumulatively between 2002 and 2008, equivalent to the emissions from electricity use of 36,400 homes for a year.
Having met their earlier commitment, Raytheon has now set a second goal, pledging to reduce total U.S. GHG emissions by 10 percent from 2008 to 2015.
To achieve its goal, Raytheon implemented an aggressive energy conservation program, since approximately 90 percent of its greenhouse gas emissions are energy-related. Raytheon completed hundreds of energy conservation/efficiency projects such as upgrading chillers, boilers, and Heating/Ventilation/Air Conditioning systems; installing high-efficiency and sensor-controlled lighting; converting to variable-speed drives for motors, pumps and fans; and upgrading to state-of-the-art automated energy management and control systems. Raytheon’s energy reduction program has been recognized by EPA’s ENERGY STAR Program five times in the last eight years, including the prestigious award for “Sustained Excellence in Energy Management” in 2008 and 2009. Raytheon employees have also contributed significantly to the energy conservation efforts.
“We salute Raytheon for meeting their goals to confront climate change, and their commitment to the Climate Leaders program,” said Ira Leighton, acting regional administrator of EPA’s New England office. “EPA is also grateful to all of the New England companies who are playing a real leadership role – both in their industries and leading the effort to address climate change.”
EPA estimates that the GHG reductions by Climate Leaders Partners will prevent more than 50 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalents per year, which is equal to the annual emissions of more than nine million vehicles.
As the country’s largest GHG goal-setting program, Climate Leaders is an EPA industry-government partnership that works with companies to develop comprehensive climate change strategies. Launched in 2002, the program has expanded from 11 charter members to 284 companies that represent more than eight percent of total annual U.S. greenhouse gas emissions. Program partners represent a broad range of industry sectors and companies with combined annual revenue equal to 12 percent of the U.S. gross domestic product.
