New Certificate in Green Meetings and Events

j0433150The finanical crisis has focused a spotlight on how expensive and resource intensive corporate meetings and events can be.  Flying individuals from all corners of the country (or world), lavish food from all over the globe rather than locally grown, and high end resorts and hotels  with huge carbon footprints.   It has become less tenable to participate in such excess both from an expense  perspective , and the environmental “optics” effect for a corporation.  For these reasons, the “green” meeting and event industry should see growth now and in the future.  As a result, there is a fairly new group dedicated to this sector of the business: the Association for Green Meetings and Events(AGME).  This group is also offering a “Certification in Green Meetings and Events (CGME”.

The vision of the Association for Green Meetings & Events is to build a professional community conducive to continued learning, overall awareness and application to sustainability and socially responsible practices for the entire global hospitality society.

The Certification in Green Meetings & Events (CGME™) is the first in the Meetings & Special Events Industries designed specifically to assist business and meeting professionals in reaching the goal of acceptable intelligibility in planning, promoting, and producing socially and environmentally responsible meetings and special events.

The 25 hour learner-centered and experiential certification provides a logistical curriculum with hands-on activities for those seeking professional recognition as a certified green meeting professional. The candidates experience a strategic business academia in green meeting awareness, knowledge, and principles; project management and processes; and, application utilizing the exclusive AGME EcoAudit in determining green return on investment.

As with a lot of “green” organisations, the AGME has only been established for about a year.  The highest concentration of membership seems to be in Atlanta, where they were founded, with chapters in St. Louis, San Diego, Boston, Birmingham and Chicago.  For more information on the organisation and their certification please visit their website at:http://www.agmeinc.org
