Green Mountain College – A Green MBA “Experience”
Green Mountain College, founded in 1834, has had a long history of providing quality post-secondary education focusing on environmental liberal arts. Located in Poultney Vermont, in the heart of an area long known for promoting environmental awareness and respect, its distance Masters of Business Administration (MBA) program, was the first accredited distance education program in sustainable business designed for working professionals in the United States; the institution has focused on teaching about sustainability for over a decade.
One of two master’s degrees offered by the College (the other being a Master of Science in Environmental Studies), the MBA in Sustainability is offered through a web based distance learning model that allows students to live at home and carry on a full-time professional career, while working towards their degree. Boasting a low student to educator ratio, both graduate programs emphasize professional development through applied skills, grounded on a strong theoretical knowledge base. The emphasis on experiential learning is a cornerstone of the programs, and students are provided an opportunity to apply their learned knowledge and skills in capstone courses and projects.
Green Mountain College is accredited by the Commission on Institutions of Higher Education of the New England Association of Schools and Colleges Inc. Total tuition for the two-year MBA in Sustainability is $23,125 USD for residents. While the program is delivered primarily on-line, the MBA begins with a brief residency designed to introduce students to faculty and to each other. In addition to the initial residency at the beginning of the program, there is another short, intensive residency after the first year. Residencies include workshops, seminars, and foundational courses that are continued through distance learning methods. Informal social interaction is encouraged through receptions and other events.
Following the residency, a series of six-week online courses are taken sequentially with a one week break between courses, allowing students to focus on the content of each course as they proceed through the program. A student may start in the program at the beginning of any six-week course. Students complete individual and virtual team projects by applying skills and knowledge needed for success in today’s business and nonprofit organizations. With a focus on sustainability and the triple-bottom-line approach, the MBA’s 28 core credit courses cover:
- Communication Management
- Management: A Triple Bottom Line Perspective
- Management of People at Work
- Information Assets & Technology Management
- Marketing and Managing the Customer Relationship
- Statistics & Quantitative Methods for Management
- Stakeholder Economics & Corporate Performance Management
- Accounting for Managers
- Ethical Issues & the Legal Environment
- Financial Measures of Value Added
In addition to these foundational courses, students select one of two concentrations: General Business Administration or Nonprofit Organization Management. Courses in the General Business Administration concentration include: leadership, values and decision making; competitive and strategic management: a stakeholder approach; and a field application project. Courses in the Nonprofit Organization Management concentration include: strategic management of nonprofit organizations; nonprofit organization financial statements and performance evaluation; marketing and brand management strategy for nonprofit entities; and a field application project.
