Originally chartered as Alaska Methodist University by the Territory of Alaska in 1957, the institution dedicated its campus on June 28, 1959. In November of 1978, the institution underwent a major reorganization and restructuring of its academic programs, and was renamed the Alaska Pacific University (APU) in recognition of these changes. Today, Anchorage-based APU offers eleven undergraduate majors and five graduate programs. Through the Department of Environmental Science, there are five main streams of green undergraduate programs at the Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science level, and one graduate program at the Masters level.
