Green Conferences: July 4th – July 11th, 2009

conference                                                    Our regular weekly feature highlighting a snapshot of green conferences being held around the world in the upcoming week.

Europe

July 7th – 10th:  CLEAN AIR 2009; Lisbon, Portugal

The Clean Air conference series has taken place in Portugal since 1989. This conference had a large growth of interest since the first editions and is being reorganized with a renovated organizing committee. The conference will deal with interconnected themes covering the reduction of local and global environment degrading emissions and aims to a better integration of supply and demand.

The conference is a platform to describe, compare and evaluate new and innovative technologies, which maximise energy conversion while minimizing undesirable emissions. Attention is also given to the improvement of existing energy systems which will still be used for a long time. Both academic and applied contributions will be welcome but particular efforts will be made to stimulate papers from industry and end users in general. July 8th – 10th: ECOSUD, 7th International Conference on Ecosystems and Sustainable Development; Chianciano Terme, Italy

The aim of the Conference is to encourage and facilitate the interdisciplinary communication between scientists, engineers, economists and professionals working in ecological systems and sustainable development. Emphasis will be given to those areas that will most benefit from the application of scientific methods for sustainable development, including the conservation of natural systems around the world. The Conference objectives have evolved over the years, seeking to integrate thermodynamics, ecology and economics into “ecodynamics”.

This successful series fi rst started in Peniscola, Spain (1997); and continued in Lemnos, Greece (1999); Alicante, Spain (2001); Siena, Italy (2003); Cadiz, Spain (2005); and Coimbra, Portugal (2007).  ECOSUD 2009 will be of interest to scientists, engineers and professionals working in the areas of ecological systems and sustainable development.  For more information and to visit the conference website, click here.

United States & Canada

July 8th – 9th: Biopower Generation USA; Chicago, USA

Biomass power generation has the potential to play a key role in the future energy supply of the US, contributing to the sustainable development of the economy, agriculture and rural communities, whilst helping reduce greenhouse gas emissions and energy imports.

According to the Biomass Producers Association, over 100 biomass power plants are connected to the electrical grid in the US (source: New York Times). The U.S. Energy Information Administration estimates the total installed capacity of wood biomass power generation is 6,000 megawatts and predicts that this figure could double over the next 10 years.

With the recent extension of the production tax credit and the availability of the investment tax credit for biomass energy projects, exciting times lie ahead for the US biopower industry.

GreenPower’s 5th BioPower Generation conference will bring together leading experts from across the value chain to examine the latest developments in the biomass power generation industry.

-What do recent policy developments mean for the biopower industry?

-How does the economic efficiency of biopower compare with other renewable sources?

-How can producers access financing in the current economic climate?

-What are issues to consider in planning a biopower plant?

-What is the potential for biopower in large scale power production?

-What are the latest technologies to improve biopower efficiency?

-How can sustainable feedstock supplies be guaranteed?

-What are the latest developments in high yield energy crops?

-What criteria are necessary for efficient transmission & distribution?

-What opportunities does biopower offer the agricultural and forestry industries?

Mexico, Central & South America

July 7th — 8th: Carbon Markets Mexico and Central America; Mexico City, Mexico

Globally, the carbon emissions trading market is booming, with the World Bank estimating its size at approximately $30 billion last year. Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean have already captured a share of that market and many estimate that that share could be much bigger in the future. The potential for carbon emission reduction projects is growing as the region’s development causes emissions numbers to trend upward. This has led the Mexican government to consider reducing GHG emissions through a domestic cap and trade system. There are already several dozen projects spread across the region that have been created by a range of entities but the opportunity for project hosts to develop new projects is huge.

The inaugural Carbon Markets Mexico & Central America conference and exhibition will bring together key players from the region – with particular focus on Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama and the Caribbean – with global industry experts. This event is a new addition to the Carbon Markets Series which is now in its 5th year and has been attended by over 2000 sustainability professionals and will continue to provide an excellent platform for new project hosts to learn about the latest market developments and do business with CER buyers.  For more information and to visit the conference website, click here.
