Canada & USA
From Monday, July 20th through Friday, July 24th, the 3rd National Conference on Ecosystem Restoration, (NCER) will be held in Los Angeles, California. The Conference will provide an interactive forum for physical, biological and social scientists, engineers, resource managers, planners and policy makers to share their experiences and research results concerning large-scale ecosystem restoration on both national and international levels. There will be an opportunity to learn about both large-scale and small local ecosystem restoration efforts and what others working at these levels have learned, what factors contributed to success, and how barriers and obstacles were overcome. Also on the west coast of the United States, ASME (the American Society of Mechanical Engineers) will be holding its 3rd International Conference on Energy Sustainability. This event will take place from Sunday, July 19th through Thursday, July 24th in San Francisco, California. The conference will consist of plenary talks, invited talks, panel discussions, workshops, tutorials, technical sessions, poster presentations and exhibitions, thus providing a unique opportunity for communication and collaboration between academia, industry and planners in the areas of Solar Energy, Energy Efficiency, Renewable Energy and Advanced Energy Technologies. The Conference will feature a special track for students interested in solar and energy efficiency consisting of technical and poster sessions, networking, and a job fair. While the conference is open to the general public, ASME Members receive a discount on their registration fee. Hillsburgh, Ontario, Canada will be the site for an introductory workshop on cob construction, on Saturday July 18th. The “Intro to Cob Construction” is intended to be an intensive, hands-on workshop, allowing participants to roll up their sleeves and apply the theory taught in the first portion of the workshop. Participants will be instructed on: how to test your soil; how to mix cob; how to stack it into load bearing monolithic structures and various cob building techniques to “turn a pile of mud into a home”. The Building As If People Mattered Conference will be held on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada, from July 23rd through 29th. This event takes place over 3 days of discussions and demonstrations, followed by three days of field trips to natural building sites in the region. Registration for each portion is separate. Asia and Pacific
The Organic Expo 2009 will be held in Melbourne, Australia from Friday, July 24th through Sunday, July 26th. The Organic Expo is Oceania’s Premier Certified Organic and Green Products & Services Expo. This industry supported event is a consumer and trade show which will profile over 200 exhibitors offering attendees with unique opportunities to taste, learn, buy, and talk about their products and services. Australia’s favorite chefs, celebrities and key industry speakers will be there to share their passions with you and others. This event is open to the public on Saturday and Sunday, and will include an Organic Kids Fun Zone. Friday will be a Trade only day. Agra, Uttar Pradesh, India will be the site for a National Workshop on Emerging Horizons in Biofuel Research and Application, from July 25th through July 27th. The workshop is intended to share information and raise awareness about the latest developments in bioenergy research, the opportunities that lie ahead for biofuels in the region from state policy makers, and provide an opportunity to connect with others from industry, academia and government. Some of the themes which will be discussed include: potential biofuel production energy sources and technologies for India; emerging research in production of biofuel from cellulosic and lignocellulosic substrates; biodiesel production using non edible oilseeds and its economics; and ensuring and measuring biofuel quality along with value addition.
