Industrial design (ID) is the professional service of creating and developing concepts and specifications that optimize the function, value and appearance of products and systems for the mutual benefit of both user and manufacturer. As a distinct discipline that works in collaboration with both marketing and engineering, industrial design focuses efforts on developing how products, environments, and interfaces look, feel, and function from a user perspective. Examples of industrial design projects can include areas of transportation, furniture, consumer products, exhibits, and user interface. Environmental Design combines the above with the sustainability principles of material conservation, recycling, designing for disassembly, and minimizing the ecological footprint of a product. An environmental design career allows and individual to combine a technical aptitude with creativity.
Auburn University has shown a commitment to environmental design at all levels through both the Bachelor of Science in Environmental Design program and its graduate Design Build program. The University has hosted a “Green Design” competition annually since 2004, proving that the school been at the forefront of “eco-design” for a long time.
