Apollo Solar’s Smart Grid technology Will be a Critical Factor in Green Job Creation
Apollo Solar, which specializes in the design and manufacture of power electronics for solar energy systems, has been selected by the U.S. Department of Energy to develop a less expensive, more efficient Smart Grid Inverter to enhance the value of solar electric systems to home and business owners. The new award is the second stage of the contract initiated in 2008 as part of the SEGIS (Solar Energy Grid Integration System) program managed by Sandia National Laboratories.
The objectives of the SEGIS Program are to develop products that allow photovoltaics to become a more integral part of household and commercial Smart-Energy systems In the announcement from the Department of Energy, the Secretary of Energy Steven Chu points out that
Solar energy will be a critical factor in achieving the President’s goal of creating new jobs as part of a clean energy economy. By integrating renewable energy onto the grid now, we can deliver power more reliably and effectively, lower utility bills for American families, and help rebuild our economy along the way.
The projects selected by the DOE focus on the most promising technology advances and include development of intelligent system controls. These projects seek to maintain or improve ower quality and reliability, return economic value, and increase integration of solar technologies into the U.S. electrical grid. “The objective here at Apollo Solar is to provide electricity customers with the options they want to plan and control their use of electric power, now and in the future,” said John Pfeifer, President and CEO of Apollo Solar.
We are very pleased to be selected by the US Department of Energy to provide these innovative products that will increase Solar PV in the US energy mix and make it possible to create and sustain the Smart Grid.
The product development will build upon Apollo Solar’s core expertise in maximizing solar energy harvest and providing energy storage capabilities in PV systems that that can work with advanced metering infrastructures.
These modular power conversion and energy management components will maximize the value of the distributed solar electric generation and offer greater control of electricity consumption and its costs.
